How to Make Vietnamese Coffee at Home

Vietnamese coffee is known for its bold flavour, smooth texture, and rich, indulgent taste. Brewed slowly using a traditional Phin filter, this method creates a strong, full-bodied coffee that pairs perfectly with sweetened condensed milk. The result is a balanced cup that’s both intense and smooth — a true coffee experience, not just a drink.

At High Country Roast, using high-quality, clean beans takes this method even further, delivering a richer flavour, better consistency, and a smoother finish in every cup.

What You’ll Need

  • 2–3 tablespoons of High-Country Roast ground coffee (medium to dark roast)
  • 2–3 tablespoons sweetened condensed milk
  • Hot water (just off boiling)
  • A Phin filter (Vietnamese coffee dripper)
  • A glass or cup
  • Ice (optional)

Step-by-Step Brewing Guide

1. Add Condensed Milk

Start by adding 2–3 tablespoons of sweetened condensed milk to the bottom of your glass. This will form the rich, creamy base of your coffee.

2. Prepare the Phin Filter

Place your phin filter on top of the glass. Add your coffee grounds and gently press them down so they’re level — not too tight, just enough for even extraction.

3. Bloom the Coffee

Pour a small amount of hot water over the grounds and let it sit for about 30 seconds. This step releases the aroma and prepares the coffee for full extraction.

4. Brew Slowly

Fill the filter with hot water and place the lid on. Let the coffee drip slowly into the glass. This process should take around 3–5 minutes — don’t rush it, as this is where the flavour develops.

5. Stir and Enjoy

Once the brewing is complete, remove the filter and stir the coffee and condensed milk together until smooth and combined.

6. Serve Hot or Iced

Enjoy it as is for a warm, rich coffee, or pour it over ice for a refreshing Vietnamese iced coffee

Why Vietnamese Coffee Tastes Different?

The slow drip method extracts deeper flavours from the coffee, resulting in a stronger, more concentrated brew. When paired with condensed milk, it creates a perfect balance of boldness and sweetness that’s hard to match with standard brewing methods.

Vietnamese coffee is more than just a way to brew — it’s a ritual. Slowing down the process brings out the best in your coffee and creates a more intentional, satisfying experience. With High Country Roast, you can take this traditional method and elevate it with premium beans, delivering a clean, bold, and unforgettable cup every time.
